Designing for Retail

There is a huge difference in high-end stores and low-end stores. The whole atmosphere is different. This is because designers want you to feel different ways at different stores. The high-end stores want their customers to feel like they are the only ones that matter. On the other hand, low-end stores want their customers to know that they have products they want for cheap.

When you walk into a low-end store, you instantly bulk amounts of products. The lighting is very bright, the ceilings are very high, and there's not much aesthetic to the building. These stores want you to know that they are not spending much money on designers so they can offer you more products for less. Typically, these stores will have a very industrial or warehouse feel.

On the other hand, high-end stores want you to believe that investing in their products are worth it. They will spend money on the design of the store to convince you that the products you are purchasing are worth the price they are asking. Typically, these stores will have dimmer lights, soft sofas or sitting areas, less product, and an associate will cater to you.

The different atmospheres change your mind about how much you're spending. When going into a low-end store, you have the mindset that you are getting a great deal. However, when going into a high-end store, you have the mindset that you are getting the best quality. Designers have to be mindful of the customer base that the store is trying to target.

  1. You're definitely right, high end store wine and dine customers into investing in their product, whereas at Wal-Mart they could care less.
